Bolllywood’s Mr Perfectionist Aamir Khan’s eldest son Junaid Khan is all set to make his much-awaited debut in the Hindi film industry with the movie Maharaj. Set to release on Netflix on June 14, the film also stars Jaideep Ahlawat in a pivotal role.  The makers of the film had shared the announcement poster of the film last month, however ever since they have refrained from even sharing the teaser or the trailer of the film. While fans have been left curious on why there has been no noise around the project, activists have started demanding a ban on the film as they feel that it portray’s Hindu religious leaders in a negative light.

Netizens have taken to X (formerly known as Twitter) to demand a ban on the film and to boycott the OTT platform for always showing content that portrays Hindu’s in a negative light. According to a report by the Free Press Journal, #BoycottNetflix started trending on X (earlier known as Twitter) with many expressing their displeasure, days after Bajrang Dal threatened to stall the release of the film. One wrote, “Hindu Jana Jagruti Samithi is protesting against the movie “Maharaj” for disrespecting & defaming Hindu saints and sects. #BoycottNetflix Bollywood always tries to show Hindu religious practices & its culture in poor light. Why don't they make movie that lots of Rape happening in Madarasa. This needs to STOP. Proud of HJS of Pune for taking stand for dharma. Great we all Sanatani with you?”

If reports are to be believed, Maharaj is based on a true incident of the Maharaj Libel Case of 1862, one of the most significant legal battles in India. Junaid reportedly plays the role of a journalist and social reformer Karsandas Mulji, on the other hand Ahlawat essays the role of Jadunathji Brijratanji Maharaj one of the heads of the Vallabhacharya sect. Earlier in the week, Bajrang Dal’s spokesperson demanded that Maharaj should be shown to the members of the group in a private screening before it is released on Netflix. They also threatened that if the makers of the film do not agree to their demands they will be taking the legal route.

On the work front, apart from Maharaj, Junaid Khan also has a project with Sai Pallavi.
